Sharks in North Texas!!

Looking for shark teeth? Head to North Texas! We recently visited Post Oak Creek in Sherman which, even though it is many, many miles from the sea, is a popular place to find fossilized shark teeth. Korey took the kids once before while I was out of town, so even though I have wanted to go for a long time, this was my first visit.

Sherman has plans to turn it into a large, easily accessible park, but it is far from that at the moment. Just driving up you’d have no idea that such a popular spot is hidden down under the bridge. All you see is a rather unimpressive-looking auto shop and some graveled parking area.

We wore rain boots and brought a Walmart sack for all the treasures we were sure to find but probably should’ve brought some type of sieve as well. After we slipped our way down the muddy and rocky path to the water we started looking around. We immediately found some neat shell fossils but no shark teeth, so we moved farther down the creek. The kids were interested for a while and dug through the rocks in hopes of finding something. After several minutes of no success, however, the immediate fun of jumping across the rocks in the water won out and they busied themselves playing in the water.

I really wanted to find a shark tooth though, and I don’t tend to give up on things like that very easily. Once I walked back and forth in the water near the shore of a lake for at least an hour to find a hat that one of the kids had lost. The kid didn’t care at all, and I had bought the hat from a consignment sale so it probably cost all of $3.00, if that. I did eventually find it. I also lost an hour of my life. 😆

After we had been there for quite some time without finding anything, I started getting really disappointed that we still hadn’t come across any shark teeth. What if the spot gets really popular when they build the park, and all the teeth get found by other people?? I felt like if I was ever going to find one, I needed to find it while we were there that day, but it was getting to be time to go.

But then….I scooped up another handful of rocks to look through and there, lying in the rocks left behind, was a very small shark tooth!! So I was quite satisfied with the trip. We gathered the kids and climbed out of the seemingly hidden ravine where we had been playing and searching back to the stark contrast of the plain parking lot, shark tooth in hand.

Have you ever gone hunting for fossils at Post Oak Creek? Did you find anything??
