We really enjoy pick-your-own berry farms. The quality of the fruit is generally so much better than the grocery store that once you have had it, it’s hard to go back to the regular stuff. Also, the kids have a lot of fun picking the berries, and I think it’s good for them to get some food directly from the plant, as opposed to always in a plastic container at the grocery store.
I have heard good things about Pecan Creek Strawberry Farm in Pilot Point and been wanting to go for a while, but it’s a little bit of a drive for us. So when a friend told me that Punjab Farms had recently opened up in Bonham and had amazing strawberries, I was so excited to check it out!
Our first trip there was early in the afternoon on a Saturday, which I knew wouldn’t be optimum since they open at 9:00 and would likely be pretty picked out, but we went anyway. We still found enough strawberries to make it worth our while, and they were so good! I had to keep an eye on my toddler because he very much preferred putting the strawberries in his mouth as opposed to the bucket. 😜 It was very muddy in several of the rows – the kind of mud where you just keep sinking and think you might lose your shoe – so finally the girls gave up and just went barefoot. They had a hose to wash our feet off with when we were done though, so it was fine.
Punjab Farms does not spray their berries with any pesticides, which I really like. The owners are also very kind and talked with my husband for quite some time about the farm and how they got it all set up. The strawberries are $6 per pound, and you can bring your own bag/container to take the strawberries home in if you don’t want to pay the $3 for their bucket (you still collect the berries in their bucket but then transfer them to your own container after you pay). They also have jam and some other items to purchase if you want.
If you are looking for a fun May activity, you should definitely stop by! They are currently open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but you can follow their facebook page for up-to-date information.
We went back again today, this time much earlier in the day and with mud boots. The plants are putting out quite a lot of strawberries, so we collected more than the last time. But just like last time, the berries we collected were beautiful and we had a wonderful time!!
